Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Homemade Saltwater Taffy

  • Start by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper and gather your ingredients, equipment, and ensure your workspace is ready.
  • Combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, water, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat until fully dissolved.
  • Once dissolved, attach a candy thermometer and boil the mixture without stirring until it reaches 240°F (115°C).
  • Remove from heat and stir in unsalted butter and flavoring extract, adding food coloring if desired.
  • Pour the hot mixture onto the lined sheet and let cool for about 5 minutes until warm enough to handle.
  • Butter your hands and begin pulling the taffy for 10-15 minutes, stretching and folding until smooth and airy.
  • Shape into a log and cut into bite-sized pieces using buttered scissors.
  • Wrap each piece in wax paper or parchment paper, twisting the ends and allowing to cool completely before storing.
