Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder helps the cake rise beautifully.
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda enhances the leavening for a tender crumb.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt balances the sweetness and enhances flavor.
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature, adds richness and moisture.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar sweetens the batter perfectly.
  • 2 large eggs contribute to the cake’s structure and richness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract gives a lovely depth of flavor.
  • 1 cup buttermilk at room temperature, keeps the cake moist and flavorful.
  • 0.25 cup cocoa powder adds that unmistakable chocolate flavor to half the batter.
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder optional, intensifies the chocolate flavor beautifully.

For the Ganache

  • 0.5 cup semi-sweet chocolate chopped, creates a decadent topping.

Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Marble Loaf Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
  • In a large bowl, cream together ½ cup of softened unsalted butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in 2 large eggs, one at a time, followed by 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • Gradually mix in the dry ingredients while alternating with 1 cup of room-temperature buttermilk.
  • Divide the cake batter in half and stir in ¼ cup of cocoa powder and 1 teaspoon of espresso powder into one half.
  • Spoon alternating dollops of the vanilla and chocolate batters into the prepared loaf pan.
  • Gently swirl through the batters in the loaf pan with a knife or skewer.
  • Bake for about 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool in the pan for about 20 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Heat ¼ cup of heavy cream in a saucepan until it simmers. Remove from heat and add ½ cup of chopped semi-sweet chocolate. Stir until smooth.
  • Pour the ganache over the cooled Marble Loaf Cake and let it set for at least 2 hours before slicing.

Notes

Ensure your butter is softened and mix ingredients just until combined to prevent a dense cake.
