Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cut in 1 cup of cold butter using a pastry cutter or forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of warm milk with 1 packet of active dry yeast and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until it becomes foamy. Once activated, add this mixture along with 1 large egg to the flour mixture, stirring until a smooth dough forms. Cover the bowl with a cloth and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • When the dough has chilled, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a parchment-lined baking sheet to place the kringle on.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a large rectangle, about ¼ inch thick. Spoon the apple pie filling into the center, creating a generous strip down the middle. Add an optional sprinkle of 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for extra flavor.
  • Fold the long sides of the dough over the apple filling to create a loose oval shape. Seal the ends with your fingers.
  • Transfer the shaped kringle onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top generously with an egg wash. Bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • While the kringle is baking, combine 1 cup of powdered sugar with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and a splash of water or milk in a bowl. Whisk until smooth and creamy.
  • Once the kringle is out of the oven, allow it to cool for about 10 minutes before drizzling the glaze over the top. Slice into 8 pieces and serve warm.
